Silly Symphony - The Grasshopper and the Ants (1934)

Grass hopper

A Grasshopper is a leaping insect closely related to roaches and crickets.
Many grasshoppers lay their eggs in the fall. By the next spring, the eggs are ready to hatch. When a baby grasshopper hatches, it wiggles slowly out of its egg. Then it pushes through the egg pod and makes its way up out of the hole.

A baby grasshopper is called a nymph (NIHMF). Nymphs may be tiny, but they have huge appetites. In fact, nymphs eat even more than adult grasshoppers do.

I like Grass hoppers, but I always seem to Hop up in the air when the Hopper does, you know that its going to jump but still....

A fire...

"The smell, the warmth, the dancing flames, the crackle, the glowing coals, the sound of crickets...there was a chill in the air and we did build our first campfire in the garden! We often do this in the evenings and we use wood, leaves etc. we saved from the garden .. I love the smell of the burning wood and branches.
Campfires provide a connection with nature, a time of reflection and a feeling of peace."

Hedgehog

Hedgehog's visit the garden mostly at night..they make a cute sniffing and snoring sound. The hedgehog has a long pointed nose with a snuffly snout at the end. This accounts for the 'hog' part of their name. They live in undergrowth and hedgerows, which explains the 'hedge' part of their name. In olden times, they were called 'urchins'. This explains the meaning of 'sea-urchin', as these marine creatures have an appearance resembling the hedgehog.

Hedgehogs are nocturnal animals, living in undergrowth and hedgerows. They eat slugs, snails, insects and even mice.(watch out Miss Moussie) The legs of the hedgehog are quite long; they can run very fast when necessary, such as to catch a mouse. Normally, however, they keep the legs tucked underneath them and give the impression of slow, tank-like creatures. Hedgehogs are not quiet - they don't need to worry about anything attacking them and the creatures they hunt will not be frightened off, so they merrily tramp through the undergrowth, oblivious to the noise. The easiest way to find a hedgehog is to listen, and they do make a lot of noise in my garden at night..

Cool Firefly

"Fireflies Flies, Bugs, or Beetles?
Fireflies are not really flies. Some people call them lightning bugs, but they are not bugs either. Fireflies are actually beetles. The firefly would be a rather ordinary beetle, except for one thing. At night, it can “light up.” You probably have seen fireflies whizzing around and flashing their lights on warm summer nights.
Some firefly larvae can glow, too. This is why people call them glowworms. Of course, they are not worms at all.
How Do Fireflies Make That “Cool” Light?
The firefly’s light is cool in more ways than one. Unlike natural and human-made light, it gives off no heat. The firefly’s light is produced by a complicated set of chemical reactions that take place in its abdomen. This complex process is called bioluminescence.

Fireflies can control the light they produce. They send out light in a pattern of flashes. Scientists believe that fireflies do this by regulating the amount of oxygen they take into their bodies. Oxygen is the fuel that helps create the light"

Cricket Songs

"Navigation - finding their way around - is a challenging problem for robots but crickets have inspired computer scientists at the University of Stirling to come up with a new way for robots to do it. Female crickets can find male crickets by homing in on the song they sing. A cricket's ears are actually in their front legs. Sounds arrive at the ears, which being on the legs are as far a part as is possible in a cricket. The legs act as long tubes down which waves of pressure pass as a result of the sound waves hitting them. A sound on one side of the cricket arrives at the ear on that side sooner than the other ear. This turns into a different amount of pressure in the tubes on either side of the crickets head. The cricket's brain can work out locations from the pressure differences, telling the cricket where the sound is coming from.
The Stirling researchers have created a similar mechanism to work in robots allowing them to navigate towards sounds"

Butterfly Questions

"Where do butterflies spend the night?
At night, or during inclement weather, most butterflies perch on the underside of a leaf, crawl deep between blades of grass or into a crevice in rocks, or find some other shelter, and sleep.

How do butterflies spend the winter?
In areas where temperatures drop below freezing during part of the winter, at least one stage in a butterfly species' life cycle must be resistant to freezing if the species is resident. Most butterflies that live in cold climates spend the winter as caterpillars, while almost as many spend the winter as pupas. A few species, mainly tortoiseshells (Nymphalis) and anglewings (Polygonia), spend the winter as adults, hibernating in holes in trees, in crevices in man-made structures, or in other shelters. A very few species spend the winter as eggs."
